Every year on April 22 the World celebrates Earth Day. The celebration was partly inspired by the first pictures of our planet hanging in the blackness of space. This year, to commemorate Earth Day, the Homestead Village Environmental Action Resource Committee (EAR) is planning events all during April.
Nature doesn’t need to happen in a wilderness setting. You don’t always have to go somewhere to experience it. Our theme, “Our Backyard!” and our events highlight what Nature has to see, hear, and find right in your or the community’s backyard. We hope you can join us as we celebrate and honor our “big blue marble” in space.
EAR’s first event, on Tuesday, April 8, is “Birds in Our Backyard,” a talk given by HV resident, Allan Pawlikowsky. Any idea how many species of birds Allan has seen in Homestead? Join us at Bachman at 2pm and find out.
The second event on April 13 is a showing of the award winning documentary, “Kiss the Ground.” It postulates that regenerative agriculture can heal many of the issues degrading our planet. A discussion of the documentary will follow.
Our finale on Earth Day, April 22, “Our Backyard: HV Earth Day Celebration!” will get you out into our backyard. Arrive at Bachman between 2 and 3 pm to pick up a map to 5 stations in Homestead and Radar Park. The Our Backyard stations include Native Plants, Seeds of Hope Vegetable Garden, Beehive Area, Butterfly Garden & Sculpture, and Pond and Creek Habitat. The stations can be visited by walking the path marked on your map. The circuit is about one mile. The estimated time to visit all five is 1 hour 15 minutes. A golf cart will circulate for those needing assistance, and a van will make limited stops. A host at each station will give a brief explanation of the station. Visit all five or as many as you like, collect a sticker at each, and then return to Bachman to view our displays and enjoy some refreshments. In case of inclement weather all displays and talks will happen at Bachman from 2 – 4:30 pm. Gather a group of friends and make an afternoon of finding out what’s in Our Backyard!
EAR hopes these events have peaked your curiosity. EAR’s special thanks to Melissa Kosman and Church of the Apostles for their help and cooperation with these events.
