Did you know that there are many musical opportunities at Homestead Village and throughout Lancaster Count? For example, in addition to the Homestead Harmony Chorale, HV Residents David F. and Sandy G. also participate in the Music for Everyone Community Chorus! Music for Everyone (MFE) exists to cultivate the power of music as an educational and community builder to transform lives in Lancaster County.
The MFE Lancaster Community Chorus was founded in May, 2010 to give people an opportunity to sing for the sheer joy of singing. They are a non-audition, all-age, multicultural, secular chorus. They offer several modes of learning, so everyone feels comfortable in rehearsals. Some singers use printed music, some use lyric sheets and some learn totally by ear. No prior music skills are expected.
MFE singers hail from all over Lancaster County and rehearse at the James Street Mennonite Church Monday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. They perform in Lancaster and surrounding counties at churches, festivals, athletic events and community gatherings.
Regarding his involvement, David remarks; “The first time I ever heard MFE CC more than ten years ago was in the Parish Resource Center, now Bachman, and I was immediately hooked with the enthusiasm and musicianship. Upon starting to participate in MFE CC, I found it (that is, the people) to be among the most diversified and friendly group I had ever been a part of, almost like “family.”
Sandy notes that “Since I moved to Homestead at the beginning of 2022, one thing I’ve enjoyed is getting back to singing with groups. I joined the Homestead Chorale, which I really enjoy, as well as now finishing my second year singing in the MFE chorus. It’s the first time I’ve been part of a chorus that mostly learns by “ear” – being taught parts by the conductors and listening to their voice-recordings. You don’t have to be able to read music, though the sheet music is available for us to download. It’s been a fun way to learn that helps keep everyone included, even those with limited vision. It’s been wonderful in both groups to make new friends through music. One of my highlights for my first year at MFE was singing in the Juneteenth program for HV, and seeing the warm response from my new friends here, as well as the chorus’ being made to feel so welcome. I look forward to singing for my new “hometown” again this month!.”
