Patriotic decorations, bugle calls and chorale singing were highlights of a Memorial Day event at Homestead Village. Each year the retirement community holds a flag-raising ceremony to honor those who have served or who are currently serving in the military,
Yvonne Duncan, an Air Force veteran, gave an invocation. Bugler Miranda Fellenbaum played “To the Colors” and taps as the flag was raised and then lowered to half-staff by William Higgs, a Navy veteran, and Douglas Motter, president of Homestead Village. Gene Moore, head of the veterans association, gave a brief history of taps; Higgs led the salute to the flag; and Motter gave a short talk. The Homestead Harmony Chorale, directed by Barry Sawyer, led singing of the national anthem and “America the Beautiful.”
Following the ceremony, a continental breakfast was served, followed by a video, “For Those Who Served,” created by resident Earl Cardellino.
