Large Print Books added to the Homestead Village Library

Large-print books, or LPs (as we’ll call them) are, for some, the only option beyond audio books or a good magnifying glass.

But did you know, LPs are expensive? Often close to twice as costly as regular print! They’re also harder to find and make up only a small share of the library book donations that we rely on given our limited budget. That’s why our LP section includes so many books that have exceeded their best-by dates – about five years for regular-print titles. Books older than that generally wind up in our periodic library sales or as donations to the Lancaster Public Library.

So it’s noteworthy that we’ve added a number of recent-vintage LPs, thanks in large part to the generosity of Homestead residents. Their donations have allowed us to add books throughout the library without having to break the bank, and much of the money saved was spent on new LPs.

Looking ahead, we’re committed to keep building our large-print collection to the extent our budget allows. In fact, we plan on opening more space for our LPs by moving the biographies to currently empty shelving near the library desk, across from the classics section.

Here’s a list of the LPs we acquired in June, with publication dates (all fiction unless otherwise noted):

  • “Payback in Death” by J.D. Robb (2023).
  • “The Women” by Kristen Hannah (2023).
  • “The Paris Novel” by Ruth Reichl (2024).
  • “Table for Two” by Amor Towles (2024).
  • “The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store” by James McBride (2023).
  • “Hello Beautiful” by Ann Napolitano (2023).
  • “Good Night Irene” (a recent library staff pick) by Luis Alberto Urrea (2023).
  • “Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt (2022).
  • “The Demon of Unrest” by Erik Larson (nonfiction, 2024).
  • “Bits and Pieces” by Whoopi Goldberg (memoir, 2024).

Residents can find the full list of June donations and purchases in the Uniguest app, visiting the Homestead Village Library, or by contacting the life enrichment office.
